t s Beall, Glasgow & Dumfries, Scotland
Dr t s Beall is an American artist based in Dumfries and Glasgow, working with communities on durational projects to recover and highlight marginalised histories. Her work spans a variety of media including performative events and guided 'artwalks', printed matter, and creative interventions in the public realm.
She is the Lead Scottish Artist for Memory of Water (2018-2020), examining post-industrial waterfronts in six European cities, funded by Creative Europe. Ongoing projects in Scotland include Fair Glasgow (with Travelling Showpeople, co-devised with Dr. Mitch Miller), and Protests and Suffragettes: Strong Women of the Clydeside (recovering and highlighting women's activism in Govan, both 2013-present). In 2017 Beall was awarded an AHRC funded Collaborative Doctoral Award at University of Glasgow, working with the Riverside Museum and Glasgow Museums. Her practice-led research developed engagement strategies through co-curated events and participatory performance.
For over a decade, Beall has worked with diverse communities to develop creative heritage and socially- engaged art projects in post-industrial urban environments, collaborating with under-represented communities in Govan (Glasgow), across Scotland, and internationally.

SELECTED SOCIALLY ENGAGED PROJECTS
2018-2020 Lead Artist, Scotland - Memory of Water
A Creative Europe funded project led by Intercult (Stockholm) working with six European river cities, sharing best practice for socially engaged artworks and organisations working within post-industrial regeneration areas. Working with Fablevision (Govan/Glasgow), artists and partners in Gdansk, Gothenburg, Limerick, Ostend and Levadia.
2013-ongoing Lead Artist - Protests and Suffragettes: Strong Women of the Clydeside (SWaC)
A collaborative project of creatives, activists, local historians, Govanites and Glasgow Museum staff who aim to recover, resuscitate, and reenact the voices of women in local protest movements using socially-engaged/performative methods. Our focus includes 1915 Rent Strikes,1971 Upper Clyde Shipbuilder's Work-In, and 1996 Kinning Park Complex Sit-In. The project has produced oral histories, archival research, Wikipedia Edit-A-Thons, talks, and guided public 'artwalks' highlighting these hidden histories. 2014-ongoing Co-Lead Artist & Consultant - Fair Glasgow
A collaborative project working with Travelling Showpeople and cultural heritage professionals, co-convened with artist Dr Mitch Miller to promote and protect the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Scottish Fairgrounds, advocate on issues of policy and legislation, and co-curate the hidden histories of Scotland's fairgrounds.
2017 Resident Artist – Riverside Solidarity
Residency for four UK-based artists between Govan / Glasgow and Gdansk, Poland examining post-industrial waterfront heritage. Collaboration between SWaC and Metropolitanka, a women's collective working to recover and highlight women's roles in the 1980 Solidarity movement and Gdansk's Lenin Shipyard.
2013 Co-Lead Artist & Doctoral Researcher – Behind the Scenes at the Fair The genesis of the Fair Glasgow project
A nine-month collaboration co-devised with Dr Mitch Miller working with Showpeople and Glasgow Museums to co-produce a participatory public artwork and external museum display in and around the Riverside Museum, Glasgow. Produced with Fablevision & Fablevision Studios, and initiated as part of AHRC-funded doctoral research.
2013-2016 Lead Artist & Doctoral Researcher - Govan's Hidden Histories & Govan Trumps
A collaborative project working with the Riverside Museum / Glasgow Museums and publics in Govan to develop an overlapping series of alternative heritage walks, trails, and games that celebrate local histories and develop connectivity across the River Clyde, linking the Riverside Museum and Govan's Riverside, Glasgow.
2012 Co-Lead Artist – Nothing about us without us is for us
With Matt Baker, part of Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art, shortlisted for a Creative Scotland Award (Community Arts Category). A 3-month project which commissioned 13 artist/makers to collaborate with 18 partner organisations. Govan Riverfront and Riverside Museum, Glasgow.
